Tobe’s cabin, complete with EV hook up …nin the Alleghany mountains of NC | Cabina en Laurel Springs

1 Habitación Cabina en Laurel Springs
This little cabin is where the world just falls away, and quiet takes over.
You can do absolutely nothing, swinging in the hammock ….
or
explore the surrounding area, swim, hike, fish, shop, stargaze, rock hound, kayak and on and on and on.
Come to make some awsome memories, and enjoy this little, well appointed cabin.
Your comfort and satisfaction are totally important to us…
There is a locked gate at the lane entrance. Don’t let that put you off. The gate is there to dissuade any curious hikers, hunters, or other various surprises … not keep out …well, bears.
There is a coded key box to the left of the gate . This key unlocks the largest padlock on the gate chain. We may have the gate open when you arrive, if possible and requested.
If the gate is locked, I will have given you the lock box code, in advance. Now, you may either choose to lock the gate behind you , or leave it open for your stay. I leave that up to you. (either way, please return the gate key back to the coded key box)
Gentry Hill lane is graveled. The road weaves up through the woods, and is especially pretty in the fall.
All wheel drive or four wheel drive is recommended for this property. Front wheel can do it… most of the time… lol.
As you drive in, there is one steeper point, which is best driven steadily ….and not by “punching it” That approach only turns the gravel into moguls for the next vehicle up.
Up and around a bend, the gravel ends out, at the cattle guard. Yep, I did say that…this is the real deal, people. ( the cows are gone now) So, you have came to the meadow.
This was once the combined 16 acre property of my dad John and his brother Tobe, Gentry.
They divided the land , and each built a cabin. Both men were career Army, Korea and
Vietnam. Tobe was even signed up in WWII , but just came in at the end, 17 years old, I believe he was, and just missed being deployed. ( thank goodness)
My dad, John, (upper cabin), was infantry during Korea, and was stationed to help hold Heart break ridge. Dad wasn’t one to brag….I had to drag that tidbit out of him. He said….”I was there to help hold it, I wasn’t there when we took
it.” Dad wanted to be sure I understood the difference.
Dad built at the top of the hill…. “So , I can get a bead on you”
Dad would say , and sorta smile.
My uncle , Tobe Gentry , was one rock hard sergent. occasionally sent into the villages of the Vietcong , pretending to be a deserter…to gain intell. Tobe built his place, tucked into the hillside, barely seen until you are in the yard.
Two strong brothers, two very different men. I am proud of them both. That’s my bit of history for you .
Now ,on to Tobe’s cabin. You will take the left trail , off the main path. It is very obvious.
There is a bend in the path over to Tobe’s place. It is snug there, and I really wouldn’t recommend pulling a trailer or boat through . Best to unhitch down by the cattle guard gate .
When you come around the bend, up into the yard, especially to those folks who had the blessing of knowing an old mountain home, mamow’s house, papow’s house….
it feels like you have came home…
There is a car charge outlet to the right of the cabin, for those of you who need a plug up. It is a 50Amp plug for EV charging….
Oh , and If you come in after dark, (and yep, it is really dark out there), don’t be scared….there will be a porch full of lights on for you.
Let’s say, you have arrived…Spoiler Alert! This cabin is small….. I do not want a single person to ever say, you didn’t warn me. 420 sq feet. One bedroom, one bath and a kitchen and living area combo.
However….this little cabin lives large, is snug and comfortable, with lots of mod/coms.
The front door has a smart dead bolt lock, for your convenience . It can be unlocked ahead of time, for
you, if you like . Just let me know
The door opens into the living area, with the room light switch to your right.
There is also a strong ryobi flash light sitting close by . It’s an amazing light. The battery recharger is there also. When you have to go back out to the car for your purse, or whatever, that light will feel good in your hand. If your dog has to go out at 1 am …. You will thank me. Lol
(Do not steal my flashlight, please. Once using it, however, you will now know what to get yourself…your love….and all your besties for Christmas! )
Your WiFi log in is posted on the side of the fridge. There is a smart TV , recliner and standard size cool atomic 50’s couch to stretch out on.
You will have two Mitsubishi mini splits to keep you comfortable, if the weather demands. Otherwise, the cabin has huge windows to throw open, for that sweet mountain breeze.
The minisplit thermostats are on the hall wall, by the fridge, and in the bedroom.
If you like to cook, you are gonna find a fully appointed kitchen, with pantry basics.
If a dishwasher or washing machine is a game changer, I am so sorry… I do not have those.
The bedroom has a super sturdy queen bed, comfort max mattress with hotel quality sheets and pillows, side tables with phone charging outlets, a wall mounted smart TV and lighted ,cedar lined closet.
Outside…you have several acres to explore. There is a tree swing at the top of the back yard, and mowed path which leads to the top of the property.
A spring fed creek runs along the western edge of the property. It is quite a pretty creek, if you are interested in taking a look. It feels sorta Tolkien like in toward the bottom , no hobbits noted.
You are welcome to hike around the 16 acres… it is fenced, thus marked. There is the big cabin up top. It is not available just yet, but may be , in the future.
Oh, the elevation here is around 3,300 ft. This particular mountain is called Pine. There is a large tree farm off to the south, which becomes jolly busy around November. Christmas trees!
The towns of Sparta, Wilkesboro and West Jefferson are all around 20-30 min. away . Just right now , highway 18 is closed due to a landslide from Helena, near Mulberry, I think. 18 into Sparta has just recently opened…things are fluid right now, regarding road repairs.
The Park Way is about 1 1/2 miles to the east of the cabin. The Mountain to Sea trail (is presently closed due to Helena damage…)
has a marked entrance just where Elk Knob enters the Parkway. But please , if you do any hiking, be totally aware of tree fall .
I could go on… but enough is enough, lady! So I will just say…If you have questions , just message me!
….Pammie
