Bornholm is just so hot right now!
Everyone's talking about this cute little Baltic island (that thinks it is in the Caribbean!) with the most wonderful, safe and clean beaches, pristine forests, culinary wonders and laid-back island living. We are less than 1 km from the sea on the island of Bornholm, known throughout Scandinavia as the “Sunshine Isle”, and for good reasons too as Bornholm has on average more sunshine hours than any other place in Denmark.
We are located within walking or cycling distance of the Arnager beach (about 1 km) and 6 km from Rønne (with its shopping possibilities, museums, restaurants and pubs). Our 18-holes golf course is only about 5 km away, an easy bicycle trip of 15 mins. And for anglers there is of course the sea, right around our small island, our dams are well stocked with pike and trout, in fact the nearest angling spot is only 750 metres away.
As the island is so small it’s strange to mention ‘local’ attractions, they’re actually all ‘local’, (see our website: bornholmbnb.com and the excellent local site: bornholm.info for more details and examples), but apart from the beaches, the rogeris, the forest cycling and hiking and coastal walks, we live close to the famous Rundkirke (Round Church) at Nylars and there are many arts & crafts studios to visit where you can see the artists busy with pottery, glass blowing and painting.
We are near the regional airport so you can easily cycle to us from there.
• The Bornholm classics:
Bornholm is known for several sights and attractions. Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest medieval castle ruin at Hammerknude, Paradisbakkerne with the 35-ton stone called Rocking Stone, Bornholm's highest point Rytterknægten, and the Ekkodalen - the stone formations between Hasle and Hammershus, Jons Kapel and Helligdomsklipperne. Our personal favourites are Bornholm’s four unique round, white-washed churches in Østerlars, Olsker, Nylars and Nykers, that were also fortresses. The upstairs sections were designed as shooting galleries to fight raiders. Amazing to think that these beautiful structures are still so well preserved after nearly 900 years!
• Arts & Crafts Bornholm has developed into a centre for arts and crafts, and in 2017 – as the first place in Europe – Bornholm was appointed as ‘World Craft Region’. When you arrive to the island, it is almost impossible not to run into an artist or a craftsman. Goldsmiths, sculptors in wood, textile, glass and jewellery artists and glassblowers, potters and designers. The island has for many years attracted a lot of different creative souls, and most of them want to share their creative urge and invite you inside for an experience. There are open workshops where you can indulge in art and there are galleries and exhibitions, attractions and museums where you can look at it. The artistic inspiration comes from the island's incredible light, the nature on the island, as well as the good clay found on the island.
• A gastronomic journey on Bornholm:
The experience of enjoying a meal can be multifaceted and on the island you can enjoy the highest level of gastronomy as well as the simplicity of a freshly smoked herring. You will also taste the best water ever! Our tap water is so pure that it won the ‘Vand Grand Prix 2019’ award last year, for the best tasting water in Denmark. In recent years the increased emphasis on chefs using quality local products has brought attention to Bornholm several times. There are several examples: from the award-wining dairy farms at Klemensker (won 2 world championships in cheese). Or the baker in Aakirkeby that has been baking its famous ‘kiks’ (rye crackers) since 1924. Bornholm has many culinary specialties, ranging from rapeseed and poultry to its famous rogeris (smoke houses), locally brewed craft beer, liquorice sweets These are some of the reasons why the island is full of creativity. • Other Attractions & Events: We have an excellent site on the island that covers every possible interesting site you may want to visit: bornholm.info
“Den Gule Svane” consists of 3 apartments: The two smaller units which sleep 2 persons each, namely the ‘Fig Studio’ (named after an old Bornholmsk fig tree in our garden) and ‘The Cherry’ (also named after an old cherry tree here). They both have nice terraces which makes them quite private. Then we have a larger aprtment, ‘The Loft’, on the 1st floor which sleeps up to 6 persons. All are self-catering (you can of course also order our famous breakfast). The Fig and the Cherry are on the ground level and consist of a separate bedroom (2 single beds), black-out curtains, a dining table and a flat screen television (Netflix, Chromecast & Apple box, Danish, Swedish, German and Norwegian channels via Telia, plus streaming facilities via WIFI). The Fig studio has a kitchenette with a fridge-freezer, Air Fryer, microwave, coffee filter machine and a cooking induction plate. The modern bathroom is tiled with shower, toilet & basin.
The Cherry is similarly equipped but is slightly larger with more kitchen space.
The Loft is much larger again and has a great terrace with views! It also has a dishwasher and full cooking hob. All three are ideal for business travelers.
All have private, separate entrances. In the case of the Fig we had to choose between giving guests acces via our private home, or via their own private entrance, but to do that we had no choice but to do the entrance in the bathroom. There is free parking, a smoking-free environment and a bicycle shed for your bicycles (we rent out 4 standard bicycles @70dk per day). We're near the beach, less than 1 km and Rønne is about 6/7 km and the airport, about 2km so we suggest you arrange a taxi via Dantaxi.
Breakfast can be ordered, as room service, at 98 DK, and includes fresh bread or sourdough bread, either baked by Sofie that morning early or from our local baker.
