The two bedrooms have hotel-quality mattresses to ensure a good night’s sleep. The spacious lounge opens onto the terrace where there is a large hot tub, perfect for relaxing in and watching the stars in the beautiful Suffolk sky. A fully fitted kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast with top-of-the-range appliances. Outside are two sitting-out areas so you can have the sun all day. They are close to the property with a view of the church and of the stunning countryside.
Wickhambrook is a scattered village of around eleven greens, 10 miles from Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Clare and Haverhill, or as the title of a book by local author John Bean would have it ‘Ten Miles from Anywhere’. The eleven greens follow an Anglo – Saxon settlement pattern of small farms and scattered groups of houses beside the fields. There is a store/post office/fuel garage, and pub serving excellent food all within walking distance.
Newmarket is famous as being the home of horse racing and you will often see the jockeys riding the horses around the track which goes round the town. The town has a variety of shops, pubs and cafés and of course the horse racing museum and the famous racecourse which holds regular music events in the summer months as well as many fixtures. The historic town of Bury St Edmunds, home to the Greene King brewery, is only 10 miles away, described locally as a ’Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk’ and known as a foodie town. Its array of independent and high-street shops will not disappoint. Take a stroll in the Abbey Gardens or explore the town by doing the town trail. A night at the Apex Theatre or the Grade I Theatre Royal at Bury St Edmunds is a treat. There are also many historic houses and gardens in and around Bury St Edmunds. The city of Cambridge is just 23 miles away.
No visit to Suffolk is complete without a trip to the stunning Suffolk coast. A trip to the traditional town of Southwold, home to Adnams Brewery, is the perfect way to spend a day with its independent shops and restaurants. Close by is Aldeburgh where you will find the famous fish and chip shop. Get there early as it is very popular. Just a little further is Thorpeness, a small village dominated by the Mere. It is popular all year round and bears witness to the village’s fantastical past. In 1910 Stuart Ogilvie bought the hamlet and set to transform it into a private fantasy holiday village. Today the village is just how Ogilvie envisaged it with pretty mock Tudor houses. You can hire boats and take a trip around the picturesque 60- acre Mere to see the islands and inlets all named by J M Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, where you will see statues of Wendy and Peter Pan. Every August a regatta on the Mere is held which culminates in a torch-lit parade of boats and fireworks. Northfield Barn offers a truly relaxing holiday.
